"A relay. A run. 216 k's of fun!"

"A Relay"

This is a team event, based on a standard model of 4 teammates, but you can invite more people if it makes the overall distance a bit easier to manage.

"A Run"

It is a trail running event, but the definition of the word “run” up to you.  Do you want to win the event?  Do you want to smash your personal goals?  Or, do you just want to get out in the mix and finish? The cut off time of 36 hours is based on an average pace of 10 minutes per kilometre, so if you’re a plodder and you are able to run some, then walk some, you should do OK.

"216 k’s"  The total distance covered is, ‘at least’, 216 kms.  The result of your team visiting the three (3) trails eight (8) times during the course of the event.  The respective length of the trails is 6 km, 9 km and 12 km, rounded down to the nearest kilometre.

"Fun!"

As with our sister event, the Kangaroobie Klassic,  there will be a huge focus on fun and inclusion.  We aim to make it an enjoyable weekend for participants and spectators alike.  Also, you will be set a little task before each leg of the relay.  Nothing too taxing or time consuming.  Just a little bit of quirkiness is all….

As the signpost suggests,  there are three trails with their own unique and varied combination of  terrain, spurs, ridges and gullies!   The one thing they share is the staging area, our Base Camp, the iconic hall at Kangaroobie.

Shorter:
Distance - 6 km
Trail Markers - Green
Task - As per the ‘shopping bag’ icon; Pick up a predetermined object and bring it back to Base Camp.

Longer:
Distance - 12 km
Trail Markers - Yellow
Task - As per the ‘selfie’ icon;  Take a selfie at a predetermined location on the trail and post it on our socials.

In-between:
Distance - 9 km
Trail Markers - Red
Task - As per the ‘? in a lightbulb’ icon; Complete a little task that works your brain muscle and provide the answer when you return to Base Camp.

Our baton will be like having a course marshal in your pocket (or clipped to your camelback).

If you are a seasoned trail runner, with a fine collection of finisher medals, then this device may be nothing more than a baton.  Something you HAVE to carry and waste valuable seconds passing to the next person.  We welcome you with open arms and genuinely look forward to watching elite runners tussle for a place on the podium.

But, if you are a reluctant starter, or someone in between, then we hope this device is so much more than a baton.

Key Features relevant to our event:

Tracking.

You progress will be a blip on screen so those at Base Camp will know that you are in fact moving, and that you are moving in the right direction.

Communication with event organisers that is not reliant on mobile phone reception.

SOS Button

If something happens and you think “Shit!  I think I need an ambulance!” This button will do the trick.  Fingers crossed no one needs it!

HELP Button

This is more of a personal preference button.  No matter the reason, you can press this button in the knowledge that the organisers will come to your location with one of your teammates in tow, ready to take the baton and continue the race in your place.  It doesn’t mean that your race is over.  A bit of rest and recuperation at Base Camp might be all you need to make sure you head out on your next leg and continue to push your boundaries.

216 km is a long way to cover by foot, even when the distance is attacked in bite size pieces.  No matter your team size or individual abilities, time will still be ticking away.   The sun will be setting and coming up again before the race is done.  Fatigue can bring the best of us undone despite our best laid plans.  This baton will be there, with no shame attached, to provide reassurance whether you call upon it or not.  Reassurance that you will not be alone no matter how physically isolated you are ; that help, for any situation, is only a push of a button away.

Kangaroobie.

So much more than a farm.......,

So much more than a camp……,

Kangaroobie is so much more than a venue, it is an ‘experience’ like no other.

The ultimate venue for school camps, farm stays, relaxing getaways, group accommodation, family reunions (or any type of reunion), weddings, music festivals, seminars & conferences, multi-sport adventure races (namely the Kangaroobie Klassic) and now the Base Camp Ultra Relay.

With 2500 acres of lush farmland and pristine Aussie bush land on offer, complimented by a backdrop of the Gellibrand River, wetlands and the Shipwreck Coast, we can guarantee that the trails will be easy on the eye if not necessarily easy on your legs.   With any luck the skies will be clear so you can marvel at the majestic beauty of the Milky Way whilst contemplating your life choices during the night-shift(s).

Here’s just a sample of the reviews that can been found online:

And, probably the most glowing review of all time;

Who can argue with that?

Did we mention that your accommodation will be sorted from the moment you enter our event?

Being a school camp, Kangaroobie has a lot of beds in lots of rooms.

Entry to the Kangaroobie Base Camp Ultra will include allocation of 12 person bunk room.   Additional beds can be organised, but the working number for “included with entry” is an even dozen.

We supply the room, you supply the people.
Whether it be teammates, family members, support crew or the random hitchhiker⁽¹⁾ you picked up along the way, there will be no additional cost to put them up for the weekend.

That’s up to 3 nights accommodation for up to 12 people FREE with each team’s entry!  You pay for the pleasure of taking turns to run around Kangaroobie for 36 hours, we give you a room!

Do you have your own homestead on wheels?  Bring it along and have free reign of the amenities on offer.  Power will be the length of an extension cord away.  For the cost of a powered caravan site refer to the schedule of fees for a bunk room…...

Check-In

Any time after 3 pm on Friday afternoon.

Check-Out

Before 9 am Monday morning.

For the duration of your stay you will have access to a commercial kitchen for all your self catering needs.  No need to bring your own crockery & cutlery.  If you can think of it, this kitchen will have it!  (or a suitable substitute, even if it takes some MacGyver level thinking).  All we ask is you do your own dishes and leave the kitchen and dining hall clean and tidy.

Entry details will be announced in the next post………..

-------------------------------------

( 1 ) “random hitchhiker” clause;

(a)  As well as conforming with all Covid guidelines, any random person you pick up along the way MUST have proof of delousing before entering any of our buildings.

(b)  Furthermore, if you let them into your car without checking their delouse status, then you will ALSO need to provide proof of delousing.

(c)  Probably best NOT to pick up random hitchhikers.
